GREAT!

I was looking for the alternate versions of CHI MAI, especially ENGLISH, which has been previously available only on the AVANZ CD 1997!!!

I have finally gotten this CD this week, the third time I'm buying a CD release of MADDALENA.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this 78 minute presentation. Although, as most of you will know, the song versions of Chi Mai have all been released before, I find them helping the flow of the music a great deal. To be honest, when I acquired the old GDM 2001 release back in 1998 in London's Tower Records store, my first impression was horrible. I had only known and loved and adored Chi Mai before, and what odd experience it was to hear the Erotico Mistico track back then! :D And frankly, the impression didn't get much better when I "upgraded" to the expanded first Saimel CD release – still the general tone was quite on the odd side in my ears.

It is only now with the inclusion of the song versions that this soundtrack has finally achieved just the right balance for me, and I am glad I eventually overcame my skepticism about buying it a third time. Highly recommended to weathered Morricone fans, too. And those only getting started on Morricone could not be better served either by this latest edition.

Cheers Bob, you have been a busy bee doing all these lately. Well done mate.

The Chi Mai single was the one that, as we know, the BBC used for Lloyd George, but as I've said before, what wasnt so well known was that they used the Maddalena up-tempo version for the BBC2 Chess programme at the time.

Having looked it up I believe it was called The Master Game. Ran mid 70s through till early 80s I think.

ah ha - here we are...."The Master Game was a BBC production of televised chess tournaments that ran for seven series on BBC2 from 1976 to 1982. Presented by Jeremy James with expert analysis from Leonard Barden and, later, Bill Hartston, the show was highly regarded for its innovative style, in which a display board with animated figurines and move notation, shown centre-left of screen, was accompanied by footage of the players cogitating, their thoughts during the game heard in voice-over. The Disco 78 version of Ennio Morricone's Come Maddalena was memorably used as the show's theme tune."

Here you are - an episode of the show with the music at the beginning.

So Morricone enjoys a game of chess ...and they used his music for an unrelated Italian film for a chess programme. Who knew eh?
I can tell you are all enthralled!!

However I am a little baffled by the fact the show started in 76 and Morricone's disco 78 came out in 78? How did they use a theme for two years before it came out, I dont know? Unless they changed themes with the new series in 78. That is quite possible.

KP,
"Disco 78" came out in 1977, your "The Master Game" clip is from 1982. I couldn't find a 1976 clip on YouTube.
My guess is they began using the "Disco 78" version in their second year (1977)?
They probably used the ORIGINAL "Come Maddalena" version during the first season (1976)... ;)

Its quite possible, Bob.

The only reason I grabbed that clip was the first I could find with the theme on at the beginining just to show people - some of the clips went straight into chess!

Not relevant but funny - it always reminded me of the pisstake that someone did - cant remember if it was Not the Nine O'Clock News or Alas smith and Jones or someone else (in fact may have been Chris Tarrant late night saturday show OTT, really cant pinpoint it), where they did a spoof chess with voice over :D where one player is saying: "What to do? I am threatened by his bishop....so.... I think will ....go queen to castle...and then flick some coffee in his face". (makes the move and then flicks coffee in the face of the other player, who carries on staring at chessboard with coffee running down his face)
And the other guy says "Ah ha, clever, I never saw that coffee flicking move...very sneaky. So I think I will take my bishop...and shove it up his nose..." (takes bishop piece, moves it like he is going to make a move on the board but carries on up and wedges it up the other guy's nostril and leaves it there, etc etc and what they do to each other gets worse etc etc :D :D

edit
Ive had a hunt, cant find the clip I was looking for but there was one Chess spoof from Not the 9 O clock news with Rowan Atkinson, but not the one I was thinking about.
