Hello Altnikol and the others, Yes, it is predictable that the Maestro will have rarely new films and CDs in the future… It appears to be logical, seeing the age and maybe his willing to have few assignments per year. We could understand this if he reduces to almost nothing the concerts… Nevertheless I believe that he will never stop, and he will go on to compose concert "absolute") music. For instance, I very eagerly wait for the cantata "Vuoto d'anima piena", a work which seems to contain strong, dense, demanding but also enjoyable, moving music !
Returning to Baaria, I didn't tell that it was bad or repetitive music, at the contrary I was a little surprised in a good sense to hear good and catching pieces. I used the expression "no new music" just to underline that we are dealing withan usual style, well-known colors, and it is not automatically a bad thing… and it is not exactly true because the Ciaramolla have and gives a new sound, a new style, never heard before. For me, novelty doesn't mean extreme sound or research, difficult and dissonant music : it evokes firstly some ways, some colors never or rarely featured in his music, like in Richard III, Mission to Mars, La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano, and even Aïda degli arberi or Vatel for instance.
Yes, after several listenings many tracks are noticeable and capture the mind. Firstly the "Sinfonia…", the first track (so of course the end titles) appears to me to be original in mixing several styles, several ways, several orchestral or instruments' colors, several climax ! I never heard like this the Ciaramolla' sound : a true discovering. I am joyful to hear each time the nervous strings (staccatti ?) emerging over the theme, unfortunately too short, I am full of serene emotion while then the strings and orchestra go on with a theme of other colors. It could have finished here, at the end of the treble strings fading out, I finishes always at this time. I find the fanfare (Baaria 2) and the "typically Sicilian" or Italian tracks (Oltre, Primo e dopo) very well done and less heavy, less grotesque than in Malèna for instance. Here there is some seriousness and dignity in them, and some Rota flavour in Prima e dopo). Their slow tempi and their orchestrations give a funebre rendition suiting to black clothes of Sicily, I think this without having watched the movie.
And at last to not to be long, I specially moreover enjoyed 3 tracks : - Racconto di una vita : yes, a simple trackin the vein of many he composed but so catching, no choice, no possible escape ! - La visita : maybe more powerful and surely shorter than Ribellione on the same strong theme, with another theme just after. - A passegio nel corso : I admire here the evolution of rhythm, the track little by little becomes different and dancing.
So, if we will not have new CDs in the future, we could maybe expect, after the film' success, after a DVD issue, a second CD of Baaria ?...
For the RAI TV movies music and CDs, I of course agree with you. But after having watched "Pane e libertà", I noticed few inedited music (around 5 mn listenable in the movie), idem for "Gino Bartali", which contains although more inedited music, but not easily heard unfortunately. Maybe you have more informations.
Friendly, Patrick
