Hi Everyone!
STATE OF GRACE is since a long time my favourite Morricone score. It works wonders in the (fantastic!) movie. But on CD (I must confess..) the music is a little bit boring and aimless. I always wonder about that. I think it is always very important to see the picture the music is written for, it opens an entirely new universe of structure and depth of the score. STATE OF GRACE is a perfect example for that. Listening solely to a soundtrack CD without viewing the movie (if you have the chance..!) makes not much sense in my opinion.

I find STATE OF GRACE a very rewarding listen on cd, however you have to immerse yourself in the mood of the music and really concentrate. It is not an easy listen, high on atmosphere and tension, but if you are in the right mood it can be very satisfying. I have the same feelings about a number of EM scores of the same period like BUGSY, WOLF, LA LUPA and even RAMPAGE.
I would agree with you though that hearing music in the movie it was intended for can highten your appreciation of the music, and on some kind of subconscious level really get into your mind and not let go.

I know what you mean and I can't tell you how often I've tried to listen to the whole CD of STATE OF GRACE, but too often I failed.. The themes are great, it has this wonderful, intense short cue NEW JERSEY and some other great moments, but overall it never connects with me. Strange.

The period of the late 80ies/early 90ies is Morricone's most interesting in my opinion and I love his dark, moody, urban style of this years. I have not so much problems to hear scores on CD(!) like CASUALTIES OF WAR, TEMPO DI UCCIDERE (although extreme monothematic!), ENDLESS GAME, HAMLET, BUGSY, LA SCORTA, UNE PURE FORMALITA, LA LUPA (great!) and so on. But neither of these movies has the qualities and the power of STATE OF GRACE. Is it the sequencing of the soundtrack or what? I don't know. Again, in the end it is still my Morricone favourite..!

I like this score too since i saw the movie....

And yes, main theme is reprised in Lolita & Bugsy..

Morricone by the way told about that in the book.....
