The economic crisis hits RAI too.

In these days, Alberto Negrin is completing the shots of his new tv film titled "57 GIORNI" (working title), starring Luca Zingaretti (Perlasca, Cefalonia...) and Lorenza Indovina, about the murder of the sicilian magistrate Paolo Borsellino.
Paolo Borsellino was murdered on 19 July 1992 in Palermo (Sicily) by the mafia, exactly 57 days after the murder of Giovanni Falcone at Capaci.
The film will be broadcasted on RAIUNO at the end of May / beginning of June.

The music, of course, is by Morricone, but unfortunately, there will not be any new track in the film, but just reused material coming from previous Morricone's compositions: ANNA FRANK, IL CUORE NEL POZZO and L'ULTIMO DEI CORLEONESI. Morricone has refused to compose new music because RAI has put at his disposal few money to finance this new project.

He says:"...with the money that RAI wanted to give me, I could not have even paid the recording...! "...but neither just a single new theme"? "...yes - he says - when it seemed that I would have done the soundtrack, I had already prepared two new themes, but now...I'll keep them for another occasion".

I knew this project since the beginning of March, but, due to the absence of new music, it did not seem to me urgent to give this news and this explains why I'm so in late in giving it.
As you know, this is not the first time that old Morricone's material is reused: MARIA GORETTI directed by Giulio Base and ICS, L'AMORE TI DA UN NOME directed by ALBERTO NEGRIN.

And now, let's go to the good news.
About ten days or before, I hope to give you news about a real new soundtrack. Be sure: this time, new music!
Do you remember that, time ago, I talked about 4/5 new projects?
Well, one was L'OFFERTA MIGLIORE, another one would have been 57 GIORNI, the third...in ten days. For the fouth and the fifth, both for the cinema, today I had the confirmation that the contract for the first of the two works has been signed, so Morricone will do the music. For the second, they are still discussing, but there are good chances that everything goes well. Anyhow, we will have time to talk about these two new films in the future.
Then, yesterday's news, confirmed today, there will be another one big surprise coming from RAI ( also in this case be sure: new music), but for this, is really too early to talk about.

What else? I am very sorry for 57 GIORNI, but, be sure, things will turn better in the future.

His music for Negrin are usually very good so it´s sad news that he doesn´t will do 57 GIORNI, but I´m really looking forward to hear news about the other projects.

What about GENTI DI MARE: L´ISOLA? Have you heard that music? What´s it like? The same RAI trade cd problem as with MI RICORDO ANNA FRANK?

Dear Mathias,
now that I know your tastes, very similar to mine, I can tell you that you will not be disappointed about the music of GENTE DI MARE.
RAI has not yet decided when to broadcast the film. It's not simple to find space for 13 episodes in the same day of the week.

As for the cd, this time it's even worse than ANNA FRANK's one, but I'll explain it better in the future when I'll have real news.
Considering the situation until today, I think that a miracle is needed...

In the meanwhile, waiting for L'ISOLA, if you have not yet done it, enjoy the wonderful suite of ELEGY FOR BROWN performed during the recent concert in Torino.
Go on U Tube at "M°EM intervista con Michele Dall'Ongaro e 2nda parte del concerto con OSN RAI".
The melody starts at 31.10. Listen to the chorus (Morricone has been very, very happy about this singer's performance) which repeats the well-known melody from 36.10 to 37.22. Good listening.

The part from Casualties of War is really wonderful. I don´t think that music has affected me so emotional before.

Good news about the music of L´Isola, which seems to be in my taste and bad for the lack of cd publication. The possibility to see that series in Sweden isn´t that big. I hope for some music clips on chimai.com when it will be broadcasted on RAI.

As for some assignments, cancelled, refused, or maintained, we maybe have some certainty about few titles, in waiting the exclusive information by Altnikol.

Cancelled : the Lajos Koltai’s projects : Spider dance (deleted), the treehouse (which have another composer),
90% sure : Come un delfino 2 (or filled by the previous music !)
Still doubtful : Fatten her by Anthony Soutter.

After a rather lengthy time of internet weaning, I'm eventually back on this forum and glad to chat with such friends like Patrick, Didier, Micke, Kp1961 and others (sorry, I can't mention all names here).

I wanted to add this brief comment regarding live versions : the case of CASUALTIES OF WAR is known since a couple of years because in Auxerre we already experienced that outstanding solo soprano voice, actually a singer from the chorus. But how about On earth as it is in heaven as performed in Rome last March? If I'm not mistaken, Ennio blended a full-bodied organ into this rendition. Isn't this new?

As for Andrea's new score for Montaldo's brand new movie, I like it. It's the kind of score that doesn't necessarily impress yourself immediately. It just grows on you. Among the similarities with his father's universe, I noticed in the last bars of track 5 what can be considered as a wink to The strength of the righteous from THE UNTOUCHABLES.
